Would it be possible to put a hopped up Toyota diesel engine in a MkII? Is it possible to tune a Toyota diesel? I have a fairly modified Jetta diesel that I love the mileage but miss the look and handling of the MkII. So is it possible to take one with a toasted engine, tune a Toyota diesel and drop it in?

Well I think that anything is possible IF you can find a Toyota diesel engine. But if you weight that against the gas engines in those cars you'll find it more cost-effective to hop those up instead. Especially if your MKII is a turbo model. Let me know what your goals are and I'll try to help you where I can.

The handling and style of the MR2 with the fuel economy of the diesel.

The challenge with this will be the procurement of a diesel engine, wiring harness, computer, etc. It's definitely custome work. I'll keep a lookout for any of those diesels for you.

I see that Toyota has the D-4D (?) 2 liter diesel. Would that fit in the Mk II?

I honestly don't know if it would fit or not. I've never actually seen one of those engines in person. But, considering that the Camry/Avalon V6 will fit in a MKII...I think any 4 cyl should be fine. Th eissue is going to probably be the motor mounts and the transmission. Nobody is going to know if they will work. You'll have to be the guinea pig.

I love your idea since I am a diesel fanatic. It sounds like a lot of work, however, anything is possible with the right amount of time, patients, and money. Keep me informed if you decide to go through with it.

It's not my highest priority right now. Maybe in a couple of years when I have more time. I'll have to do some research on the engine. It would be a hoot to do - the most fun and best looking sports car made that get's 40+ mpg. Then if I can tweek it to scream too ... !

Dana,
I also have a 91 MR2 and have been trying to decide to convert it or not? I would probably go with a VW Diesel for I am more familiar with the simplicity of them. This is the only post/anything I have ever found where someone else had the same idea. Everyone wants to hop up a MR2, not worried about fuel economy.
It's ben a while since this was posted, 2004.. Your last post mentioned this conversion in a couple years, now it has been. Any chance you are further along in this one and only MR2 conversion?
I hope this makes it to you, not sure if it will get e-mailed and I see it has been forever since your last post on this one.
Thank you,
Eric

My friend over here in Ireland supes up cars for a living, and he knows some guy who put a 2 Litre camry diesel engine into an MR2.
I am thinking of doing the same, and then converting the diesel to run on PPO (plant oil). So its carbon neutral, and even cheaper to run.
But if I could keep the MR2 petrol performance by putting a bigger diesel engine in it and gearing it up that would be better.
Maybe one out of a Hi-Lux pick up!
Could that be done?
